X-Acto School Pro Heavy-Duty Electric Sharpener (1670) Review

Teens are rough on electric pencil sharpeners. I don’t know exactly how they do it, but bits get jammed in there, the motors burn out, they grind on and on. Not this one. I really like it. I like it so much I bought a second one for my kids at home to use. The large receptacle for the shavings holds a lot. I sharpens quickly and efficiently and you know when the sharpener is done. I have students who stop by my room just to use the sharpener, though I like to pretend it’s to visit with their favorite teacher. I like how it works on different sized and shaped pencils – I have a student who uses these wierd triangular pencils and they’re no problem in this sharpener. I’m surprised that other people have found it loud – it’s certainly no louder than any other electric I’ve used and even quieter than many. It has stood up well to daily classroom use including a bunch of standardized testing sessions. Put this item on your teacher wish list – maybe some nice parent will buy it for your classroom!

I HATE battery operated pencil sharpeners. They never seem to last very long before the guts break. When my last battery operated sharpener went to the big office in the sky, I decided to go back to a manual solution. I read lots of reviews and decided to try this model. In short, I love it. It sharpens my pencils to a nice point, mounted easily to my wooden bookshelf, and makes me feel better when my 3 year old uses it. I know that because of the way the pencil size guide works, she can’t get her fingers in there and accidentally hurt herself (something I always worried about with the automatic ones). Best of all, it brings back that pleasant sensation I remember from school of sharpening a pencil. Standing in line, sharpening, the smell of the wooden shavings, all that good stuff. I don’t expect this thing to wear out anytime in the next 20 years or so but if it does, I will be purchasing the same one again.
